Info about Elena and registration info below

Elena Lentini began performing Middle Eastern dance in 1969, dazzling audiences in New York area Middle Eastern clubs with her grace and intensity. Elena brings to dance a unique lyrical focus, a qualify of mystery, and a commitment to the integrity of every movement as she sculpts fluid designs with her body.

In 1971, when the esteemed dancer Ibrahim Farrah started his company, Elena joined as soloist, teacher and right-hand to Farrah. The company debuted at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City and continued to tour the U.S., including a run at the Kennedy Center. Weekend workshops often drew over a hundred participants. In 1979 and 1980, Elena made a protracted trip to the Middle East, performing in Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.

When Elena returned to New York, she continued to perform and teach, offering group classes and private coaching. She also studied other forms of dance, expanding her vocabulary of physical expression and her understanding of the body and movement. She studied modern danceand Spanish Flamenco. Elena worked with her Flamenco teachers to recreate the Arab-Spanish fusion dances which were traditional during the Moorish period of Spain's history. These dances are rarely performed anymore, partially because they require a wide and diverse range of skills from the liquid fluidity of Middle Eastern movement to the sharp precision of Flamenco. Elena began performing these dances in 1985 with the Carmen Rubio Company and Flamenco Moro.

In 1988, Mabou Mines' director Lee Breuer asked Elena to join the group at the Yale University Theater for a preview of their production of The Warrior Ant. Elena was asked to choreograph specific scenes, including those set in Hell. She utilized five Middle Eastern dancers and performed a solo with an eight foot Bunraku puppet worm. The production subsequently had an acclaimed run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The work with Mabou Mines opened up a new realm of performance for Elena. She began studying mime with the American Mine Theater and with the Polish mime, Stephan Niedzeilkowski. She performed and choreographed material for American Mime Theater member Goutam Datta for his1990 multi-media performance, Calcutta 300. She also performed at the World Music Institute with Majnun Layla in a program of innovative Middle Eastern music and dance.

In June of 1988, Elena started her own company, Caravansary Dance Theater. The group used Middle Eastern dance fonns in conjunction with the many other types of performance which had influenced Elena, presenting startling and imaginative new hybnds. Elena's signature piece featured her as a statue who has come to life (this statue of a veiled and masked dancer is on view in the Metropolitan Museum.) Another piece featured seven dancers with Bunraku butterfly puppets on sticks. In yet a third, Elena took her inspiration from a woman she had seen washing the floor in a Baghdad post office. Most recently, Elena has created and perfonned dances fusing Japanese Butoh and Middle Eastern forms.

Classes and Workshops in Middle Eastern-Dance
Elena's classes introduce, explore and delve into the depth of Middle Eastern dance, the timeless form popularly known as belly dance. Elena's interpretation of this traditional dance style evokes the timeless expression of feminine grace and beauty. The atmosphere in Elena's classes is gentle and encouraging, yet dynamic and exciting. She patiently leads novice dancers through introductory stages, while challenging seasoned performers to go beyond what they have already achieved and demanding ever greater feats of artistic inspiration.

Classes begin with a simple yet fluid warm-up which can be mastered quickly by dancers of any level. Elena proceeds to basic and then more complex isolations which are the foundation for many of the movements of this form. Choreographed sections concentrate on rhythmic interpretation, personal expression, creative interpretation, focus and presentation. Elena's classes go beyond steps alone. Technique becomes a tool for expression rather than an end in itself. Elena challenges her students to make the movements their own and insists on the quality of the dancing rather than the bare correctness of the choreography.

Students will also learn the use of zils (finger cymbals) with particular emphasis on understanding rhythmic patterns, as well as the interpretive use of veils. Zils and veils are available for class use.

Elena teaches group classes on an on-going basis at Fazil's Dance Studio in New York City. She is also available for intensive workshops (day, weekend, week- long, or multiple week series) as well as individual coaching. Classes can be geared for beginners, intermediate level dancers, professionals or mixed groups.
